Greenside's vibrant Gleneagles Road, a popular hub for restaurants and cafes, is set to undergo significant pavement and pedestrian infrastructure upgrades starting in late May. The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) announced plans for the comprehensive refurbishment, addressing long-standing concerns regarding uneven surfaces, cracked paving, and inadequate pedestrian crossings that have posed challenges for both locals and visitors.
The project, slated to commence around May 27th, will focus on replacing damaged paving stones, improving drainage systems along the sidewalks, and enhancing accessibility features such as wheelchair ramps at key intersections. Additionally, several pedestrian crossings will be repainted and clearly marked to improve safety, particularly during peak hours when the strip is bustling with activity. Ward 87 Councillor David Fleming expressed his satisfaction with the planned improvements, highlighting their importance for the community.
"Our residents and local businesses have consistently raised concerns about the state of the pavements on Gleneagles Road, which is the heart of Greenside's social life," Councillor Fleming stated. "This upgrade is not just about aesthetics; it's about making our suburb safer and more accessible for everyone, from young families enjoying Greenside Park to patrons visiting our esteemed establishments. We anticipate minimal disruption during the construction phase and appreciate the community's patience as we work towards a better pedestrian experience."
The JRA has indicated that the project is expected to be completed within three months, weather permitting. Residents are advised to look out for signage detailing temporary access changes and potential pedestrian diversions during the construction period. This initiative is part of a broader city-wide effort to enhance public infrastructure and ensure better service delivery in key commercial and residential nodes.
