Greenside residents, in collaboration with the Linden Police Station and the Greenside Community Policing Forum (CPF), are rolling out a proactive new safety initiative aimed at reducing crime and fostering stronger community vigilance. The initiative, discussed at a recent CPF meeting held at the Greenside Community Centre, focuses on increased patrols, improved communication channels, and community-led awareness campaigns.
The move comes in response to a perceived uptick in opportunistic crimes, particularly house break-ins and street robberies, which have impacted the vibrant Gleneagles Road strip and surrounding residential areas. The CPF plans to implement a WhatsApp group dedicated to real-time incident reporting, alongside encouraging residents to participate in organised neighbourhood patrols. Training sessions for new patrollers and a public awareness drive on home security best practices are also on the agenda for the coming weeks.
Sergeant David Mkhize, Community Liaison Officer for the Linden Police Station, expressed optimism about the collaborative effort. "Our partnership with the Greenside CPF is crucial. This new initiative allows us to leverage community eyes and ears, providing vital intelligence and deterring criminal activity. We encourage every resident to get involved, whether through active patrolling or simply reporting suspicious behaviour. Together, we can make Greenside a safer place for everyone," he stated during the CPF meeting.
The CPF urges all Greenside residents, particularly those living near Greenside Park and the popular restaurant precincts, to attend upcoming public meetings to learn more about how they can contribute. Information regarding patrol schedules, security tips, and contact details for emergency services will be widely distributed through local community groups and online platforms, reinforcing the collective commitment to a secure Greenside.
